Professor English and Comparative Literature and the 1939 Society Samuel Goetz Chair in Holocaust Studies at the University of California, Los Angeles. He published in „American Literary History”, „Critical Inquiry”, „Cultural Critique”, „History and Memory”, as well as in „History and Theory”, „New German Critique” and „PMLA”, and in numerous collected volumes.he is the author of two books: Multidirectional Memory: Remembering the Holocaust in the Age of Decolonization (2009 / Polish translation 2016, French 2018) and Traumatic Realism: The Demands of Holocaust Representation (2000). Currently he is involved in research project devoted to the relationship between migration and the confrontation with the legacy of National Socialism and the Holocaust in contemporary Germany.
